Plein Air Watercolor: Capturing Fall in the CSRA

$200 MEMBER PRICE: $170

with Thomas Needham

Calendar Next available session starts Oct 3, 2026 at 10:30 am, runs for 4 weeks

Derived from the French expression for "in open air," plein air painting invites artists to step outside the studio and capture the landscape live on location. This fall, join us on Saturday mornings as we travel to scenic spots throughout the CSRA to paint the vibrant autumn season in watercolor. Painting outdoors presents unique and exciting challenges, from shifting light to vast surroundings. At each weekly location, you will choose your own focal point and learn how to translate the scene before you onto paper. With individual guidance and suggestions from the instructor, you will focus on framing strong compositions, working with confidence and speed, and learning the art of editing and discovering what elements strengthen your painting and what can be left out. Classes meet every Saturday morning at a different designated location across the CSRA. Students bring their own watercolor supplies, and a complete supply list will be provided following registration.

*If a class must be cancelled due to inclement weather, a make-up date will be provided.

**No class on October 24, 2026.

with Alex Foltz

Calendar Next available session starts Oct 5, 2026 at 6 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Unlock the secrets to striking, realistic portraiture in an oil painting class designed to accelerate your skills and build your confidence. If you have ever wanted to capture the true essence of a person on canvas but didn’t know where to start, this class provides the clear, actionable roadmap you need. Whether you want to paint family members or simply elevate your studio practice, mastering the portrait is a major milestone for any artist. This class gives you the foundational toolkit to do exactly that. We will focus intensely on the core pillars of portraiture: establishing solid proportions, achieving a true-to-life likeness, and mixing accurate skin tones that pop. By working with two completely different live models, you will train your eye to adapt to different facial structures and features in real-time. You will leave this class not just with a finished painting, but with the practical skills and confidence to approach any portrait.

*Is this class right for me? If you already have some oil painting experience under your belt and are ready to take your skills to the next level, you’re in the right place! Because this is an intermediate-to-advanced class, we ask that students have a basic working knowledge of oil paints before enrolling.

Foundations of Acrylics: The Essential Skills 101

$294.12 MEMBER PRICE: $250

with Tiphiknee De Herrera

Calendar Next available session starts Oct 8, 2026 at 5 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Discover the joy of putting brush to canvas in this four-week introductory journey. Foundations of Acrylics 101 is designed to be your creative sanctuary, a place where the technical foundations of art meet the relaxing flow of the painting process. Whether you are picking up a brush for the very first time or returning to the easel after years away, this course offers a gentle, structured path to artistic confidence.

Together we will move step-by-step through the life of a painting, using the timeless beauty of still-life arrangements to sharpen our eyes and steady our hands. We begin by exploring the soothing rhythm of color mixing, learning how to create a harmonious palette from just a few primary tubes to find clean, intentional hues. As your comfort grows, we’ll transition into the logic of light, breaking down complex objects into simple shapes and using soft shading to breathe three-dimensional life into your work. In the later sessions, the focus shifts to the tactile world of texture and layering, where you will learn the "rounding out" techniques that turn a flat sketch into a soulful, finished piece. We conclude our time together by adding those crisp, luminous highlights and fine details that bring a sense of magic and "pop" to your masterpiece.

Join us for a couple of hours each week of focused, quiet creativity. You’ll leave not only with a finished still-life painting you’ll be proud to display but with a foundational toolkit of skills and a refreshed spirit to carry into your next creative project.
