Comic Art & Sequential Storytelling

$147.16 MEMBER PRICE: $125.09

with Jacob Boland

Every one of us has a story to tell, whether it’s a grand fictional adventure or a slice of our own lived experience. Whether you are 17 or 70, a complete beginner or a seasoned doodler, local artist Jacob Boland invites you to discover the power of sequential art. This dynamic, hands-on course goes far beyond basic drawing, it’s an exploration of non-linear storytelling designed to help you find your unique visual voice, achieve a sense of mental balance, and become a more confident communicator. Your journey begins with the very foundations of the medium.

Step by step, you will learn to map out your ideas using quick thumbnail sketches and outlines, before diving into the mechanics of panel layout to master narrative flow and guide your reader’s eye. From there, you'll explore composition and blocking to bring depth and dramatic tension to your pages. Finally, you will breathe life into your worlds by mastering the professional, atmospheric techniques of ink wash, composition, and shading. By the end of the course, you will not only walk away with a wealth of new artistic skills and a mind cleared of clutter, but you will also take home your entire portfolio of original work from the final session.

Spaces are limited to ensure personalized, one-on-one guidance from Jacob. Reserve your spot today and turn your blank pages into powerful stories!

Intro to Drawing II: Chromatics & Color Theory

$294.12 MEMBER PRICE: $250

with Gretchen Hash-Heffner

Calendar Next available session starts Sep 15, 2026 at 6 pm, runs for 6 weeks

Once you have mastered the language of light and shadow, a world of vibrant possibility opens. This course is designed as the natural evolution for those who have discovered the power of the pencil in our Intro to Drawing I class and are ready to breathe life into their work through the sophisticated medium of colored pencil. We invite artists of all generations to return to the studio, reuniting the precision of our foundational skills with the emotive energy of a full-color palette. Our journey begins by revisiting the "Inner Architect”, refreshing our mastery of line, shape, and perspective to ensure our structural bones are rock-solid. From there, we transition into the foundational principles of color theory. You will learn to see color not just as a decorative layer, but as a structural tool. We move beyond "coloring in" to explore how hue and saturation interact with our established knowledge of value and form, allowing you to create depth and dimension that rivals any painting. The heart of the class lies in the exploration of the colored pencil itself. You will dive into professional techniques such as layering, burnishing, and glazing, discovering how to blend pigments directly on the page to achieve rich, luminous mid-tones and dramatic, high-contrast shadows. We continue our focus on thoughtful design through thumbnail sketching, ensuring your compositions are as intentional as your color choices. Join us as we bridge the gap between the sketch and the masterpiece.
